“Unfortunately, this is an actual conversation between my therapist and I. The moment she said, “You need friends” I (1) wanted to laugh because it’s hilarious for your therapist to say that to you, and (2) knew I was going to make a video about it.
I don’t know why people on the internet would be surprised that I don’t have many friends, but I really don’t. At least not people that I hang out with on a regular basis. I have a hard time with it, I struggle to remember to maintain the friendships I do build, and on a whole, I just feel really uncomfortable in social situations. Can you relate to this? Who knows.
But she did bring up really valid points. I do feel intense waves of loneliness, and my independence with being alone has turned more into a way to withdraw and not have to deal with any kind of social anxiety. I think (hope) that a lot of people can relate to this, especially today, when kids aren’t really playing outside anymore, when we Skype each other instead of meeting up, and when you can shoot your mom a text instead of calling.
Don’t forget that we’re social creatures. And just like how a dog can become depressed when it’s left at home all day, you can too. We need to be around people. It’s thousands of years of evolution and biology ingrained into your basic need to survive.
